Blogging began in the mid ’90s, and the term “Weblog” was coined in 1997 by John Barger. The term “blog” was coined in 1999 by Peter Merholz.
A blog is a website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order. For many years, blogs were just text-based websites that kept records of days, similar to a captain’s log on a sailing ship.
With the advent of free blogging software, like Blogger and WordPress, blogs became available to anyone. With internet connection becoming easily available, being on the web became very easy. Blogging is a simple way to display one’s social presence, views, ideologies and opportunities.
Blogs are formats for information. Blogs are being used by professional journalists and writers to break and report news. Increasingly blogs are used widely by Corporates, Brands, Public figures to create positive buzz about themselves, as they perform well in Search Engine Ranking (aka Results).
Another important reason people pursue blogging is to earn an income, using the services and products they can provide. A common terminology you will find is “Make Money Blogging“.

Blogs are often organized by topic. Popular topics include politics, technology, media, sports and business.
The diverse world of Blogging today encompasses content blogs, photo blogs, video blogs (also called Vlog’s) etc. Mobile blogging devices may well change the definition of blogging entirely by making it possible for bloggers to create new kinds of posts.
Blogs are ranked in popularity based on the strength of content, its popularity. As you create more information that is used by people, your site will be considered as an authority. There are millions of blogs that are present in the world wide web and you should expect your blogs to rank over a period and not instantly.

Between all of these different forces that are constantly expanding and reshaping the blogosphere. Blog and Website are interchangeably used today so much so that they mean the same.
